Background of the study
Nigerian Pidgin slang is a dynamic linguistic variety that thrives among urban youth, particularly in Port Harcourt. This study investigates the use of morphological markers—such as distinctive affixes and reduplication—in Pidgin slang, exploring how these elements contribute to identity and social expression among young speakers (Ibrahim, 2023). Pidgin slang, characterized by its inventive word-formation strategies, often reflects the cultural vibrancy and socio-economic realities of urban life. Young speakers employ morphological markers to differentiate in-group language, create humorous or emphatic expressions, and negotiate social boundaries (Okoro, 2024). Data collected from social media interactions, street interviews, and informal gatherings reveal a high degree of morphological creativity that both challenges and enriches standard Nigerian Pidgin. This research examines the frequency and functions of these markers, considering the influence of media, peer interactions, and global cultural trends on their development (Eze, 2025).

Statement of the problem
Despite the popularity of Nigerian Pidgin slang among urban youth, there is limited systematic research on the morphological markers that define its structure. Preliminary studies indicate that innovative morphological markers are frequently used; however, detailed documentation of their frequency and function is lacking (Ibrahim, 2023). This gap hinders efforts to understand the role of morphology in shaping youth identity and cultural expression. Without comprehensive analysis, educators and language planners cannot fully appreciate the impact of slang on linguistic evolution (Okoro, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

To document morphological markers in Pidgin slang.

To analyze their role in expressing youth identity.

To assess the influence of digital media and global trends.

Research questions:

What morphological markers are prevalent in Pidgin slang?

How do these markers function semantically?

What external influences shape their usage?

Research Hypotheses:

Morphological markers in slang are significantly innovative.

They play a key role in youth identity formation.

Digital media enhances the frequency of these markers.

Significance of the study (100 words):
This study is significant as it explores the morphological underpinnings of Nigerian Pidgin slang, offering insights into urban youth culture and linguistic innovation. The findings will benefit educators, sociolinguists, and policymakers in understanding the evolving nature of urban slang in Port Harcourt (Ibrahim, 2023; Eze, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to urban Pidgin slang in Port Harcourt and does not address formal registers or other linguistic features.

Definitions of terms:

Morphological Markers: Elements such as affixes that signal grammatical or semantic information.

Pidgin Slang: Informal, creative language used by urban youth.

Urban Youth: Young individuals living in metropolitan areas.
